Pepin's orders are to deploy the 100e Ligne in defense between the castle and the village, holding the 21e Legere in reserve and looking for an opportunity to withdraw if the French can repulse the Spanish attack. Ballasteros orders 1 Brigade to assault the village, with 3 Brigade moving up to their right in support and 4 Brigade behind looking to exploit openings. Anglona moves up on the left flank aiming to move around the village and take the French in the flank and rear.
The Spanish begin their advance towards Santa Olalla, with 1 Brigade and 3 Brigade marching forward. Anglona's cavalry move forward on the left in the planned flanking move. Meanwhile the French are unnerved by the site of the sizeable Spanish forces but remain in position.
The French skirmish line moves forward to contest the Spanish advance. Meanwhile the artillery battery opens fire on the approaching columns at long range causing minor casualties to the Provincial de Oviedo regiment.
The French battery continues it's fire on the advancing columns, causing a few casualties.
The desultory fire between the skirmish lines continues with the Spanish causing a small number of casualties.
French artillery and skirmishers continue firing on the advancing Spanish, causing a trickle of casualties. The French skirmishers move out of the path of the advancing Spanish.
The Spanish close in on the French position, with their cavalry angling into the gap between the village the the olive grove. French artillery fire begins to intensify as the assault approaches, starting to deplete the Provincial de Oviedo.
The French battery switches to canister as the Spanish approach, infliicting heavy damange on the 1 Brigade. !00e Ligne voltigeurs continue to chip away at 3 Brigade's skirmish line.
As they approach the enemy many of the Spanish units begin to hesitate, with Anglona's cavalry and 3 Brigade failing to move forward. Ballesteros waves 1 Brigade into the assault on Santa Olalla, cheering his men in to the charge against the French garrison.
3e Battalion of 100e Ligne defend the village robustly, forcing the Spanish battalion assaulting to retreat in disorder.
The Spanish throw two more battalions against Santa Olalla and rally the first battalion of the Navarra regiment. The other two brigades move up in support. 3 Brigade's skirmishers are wiped out by the more effective fire of the 100e Ligne voltigeurs. The voltigeurs now start to target the columns behind, as does the French artillery causing minor casualties.
The assault on Santa Olalla continues, with the French grimly clinging on but taking heavy casualties.
The Spanish assault on Santa Olalla continues with a battalion of the Navarra regiment thrown into the fray while the Princesa and Provincial de Oviedo battalions reform. 3 Brigada remains to their right in support and forms line.
3bn of 100e Ligne having now taken heavy casualties is starting to look severely battered, leaving the whole regiment hesitant as the Spanish assault continues. Pepin begins to lose control of the situation as his ADC are nowhere to be found meaning he cannot order the 21e Legere from reserve into line to shore up the faltering defense in the village. The French continue to fire across the line inflicting small numbers of casualties on the advancing Spanish but failing to cause any real damage. The battalion of 100e Ligne in the village holds the Spanish assault, but with many men now out of action, the battalion finally breaks and streams to the rear, dispersing. The remainder of the regiment are shaken as they see their comrades flee the field.
The morale of the 100e Ligne is fatally shaken by the dispersal of their 3e battalion in Santa Olalla. Pepin frantically tries to retain control of the situation, seeking to rally 100e Ligne and bring 21e Legere forward, but 100e Ligne falter and fall back and the artillery battery limbers and heads to the rear.
With Santa Olalla abandoned, 100e falling back, and Spanish cavalry looming to the east of the village, Pepin realises the situation is lost. He orders 21e Legere to form square to repel the cavalry and cover a retreat.
Not quite able to believe the French are starting to fall back, 3 Brigade hesitate to advance. The Navarra regiment having seen the garrison of Santa Olalla melt away move forward to occupy the village while the rest of 1 Brigade reform behind them having taken heavy casualties in the assault. Anglona orders the cavalry to move around the village to see what remains of the French.
100e Ligne continues to fall back unsteadily onto the road south, looking like things could fall apart quickly. 21e Legere stands in square to cover their comrades' retreat waiting to see if the Spanish cavalry will charge.
The Spanish 1 and 3 Brigades move foward with 1 Brigade's skirmishers moving through the village to exchange fire with the 21e Legere. Anglona considers whether to risk a charge against the French squares but decides against risking it and waits for the infantry to move up.
After faltering backwards, 100e Ligne finally breaks with the cry "sauve qui peut" and runs from the field. Seeing their comrades break, 21e Legere starts to look unsteady, falling backwards as the Spanish advance towards them.
Ballasteros urges his troops forward to exploit what it is now clear is their victory. 1 Brigade rushes forward in line to the gap vacated by 100e Ligne as they flee the field. Anglona shifts his leading cavalry unti into line, but continues to hold off charging the still firm squares of 21e Legere. 1 Brigade's skirmisher continue their tussle with the 21e Legere's voltigeurs each side causing minor casualties. As the day comes to an end, the Borbon cavalry with the Granaderos de Llerena in support advance to test the 21e Legere. The French quickly form square and the Spanish refuse to charge home. Ballasteros allows the French to withdraw in good order and recover their stragglers as they retreat down the road to Seville.
